Sustainability Partners Include:

Climax Molybdenum, A Freeport-McMoRan Company and Colorado School of Mines

Sustainable development has become a critical component of many professional university degree programs and is particularly important in preparing graduates for the extractives industries. Colorado School of Mines students are flexing their creative muscle on a real-life challenge to work with Climax Molybdenum, a Freeport-McMoRan company, in envisioning innovative ways to repurpose the Henderson mine following the eventual depletion of the mineral resource, and the social and economic transition of the mine and surrounding communities.

Trout Unlimited

In order to promote our mission of conserving, protecting and restoring North America’s coldwater fisheries and their watersheds, Trout Unlimited’s Western Water and Habitat Program has completed 30 successful abandoned mine restoration projects across six different western states. These projects have restored habitat and water quality in nearly 200 stream miles and reconnected roughly 65 miles of tributary streams and floodplains.

Mountain Coal Company and the US Forest Service

Mountain Coal Company, LLC, working jointly with local US Forest Service staff, has continued a program over the past several years to annually conduct field reviews a year prior to proposed road and site construction on the National Forest. This program works to better ensure that the sites and roads fit the actual conditions in the field and results in less overall land disturbance and minimizes resource impacts.  If changes are needed to the planned and previously approved permit applications, any needed revisions can be more timely prepared and submitted well in advance of the next construction season.

 Propeller

The mining industry is leveraging drone data to transform the way they operate by combining accurate drone programs with powerful data analytics platforms to understand the true status of their site, thereby reducing their risk of not knowing and allowing them to predict and plan for costs.

Simark Controls Ltd.

Eco-friendly Fuel Cell Solar power solutions are a smart technological alternative to traditional fuel gas genset and standalone solar off-grid power systems. The dual power supply provides superior reliability, a streamlined footprint and significantly lower total cost of ownership with zero maintenance and months or years of system autonomy. Fully autonomous EFOY Pro Hybrid solutions packaged for stationary or mobile applications improve operational efficiencies, minimize yearly operating costs and can be dependably operated in harsh climatic and industrial environments making them the perfect solution for mining applications.

Trapper Mine and Colorado Parks and Wildlife

Trapper Mine received a 2018 Good Neighbor Award presented by the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement for their work with Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Recognizing the ecological diversity present at Trapper Mine including elk, bear, antelope, deer and sharp-tailed grouse, the organizations work to continuously create a sustainable habitat for these animals. Trapper Mine plays host to nature enthusiasts from around the globe hoping to observe the choreographed mating rituals of the sharp-tailed grouse, adding a unique spin to day-to-day operations.
